The Dead

‘…snow was general all over Ireland.’

Two of Ireland’s leading theatre companies—ANU and Landmark Productions, in association with the Museum of Literature Ireland, created a unique immersive theatre experience of James Joyce’s The Dead, in the historical interior and unseen rooms of MoLI at 85 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2. With a cast of 12, and 95 performances, it ran for eight weeks across the Christmas period.

The design draws from the final lines in Joyce’s story. White text falls faintly throughout the design, faintly falling over the photography. In keeping with the immersive nature of the experience, Century Old Style and Cheltenham—typefaces contemporary with the book—are used throughout. A secondary colour that matches the cover of the first edition of Dubliners is also introduced into the programme design.

‘ … his soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.’
